A man has been injured in a machete attack in Barcelona’s Old Town today.

Footage shared on social media showed a man in black t-shirt and shorts running down the narrow streets wielding a machete around 7pm local time.

He ran down Carrer de la Ciutat, right past pedestrians and a cyclist, some of whom watched silently, even seated, while others screamed and fled.

At Plaça del Regomir, he appeared to catch up with a man in white trousers who had been weaving between people while holding a plastic bag.

The suspected attacker then turned away while the man in white trousers continued running around a corner, no longer with a bag in hand.

Police confirmed a man had suffered head injuries in the attack. They are not believed to be serious.

A man was arrested nearby on Baixada de Viladecols. He has not been identified or charged at this stage.

Known as Ciutat Vella, the Old Town is where Barcelona first formed more than 2,000 years ago.

With Roman and Medieval architecture still visible, the narrow streets and museums of the Old Town’s Gothic District are major draw for the nearly 26million visitors who come each year.

But Barcelona isn’t always a tourist paradise. Its 1.6million inhabitants sometimes tire of tourists and their impact on the cost of housing.

Around 3,000 people joined a protest where water guns were squirted at tourists last summer.

Last October, a man slapped a baby in the face and threatened to kill a family of tourists while they were sightseeing in Montjuïc park.
